Traditional Engagement Rings

A traditional engagement ring for most refers to a solitaire diamond on a simple band in a high-quality metal of at least 14K white or yellow gold, if not platinum. This diamond setting is infinitely classic, will never go out of style, and specifically calls attention to the beauty of the diamond. It also flatters any finger and remains the most popular cut of 58 facets. At Kizer Cummings, if a traditional style reflects your aesthetic, we have plenty of rings you can review right here. The good news is you can still personalize a traditional engagement ring. If, for example, you’re looking for this classic style, yet with just a bit more flair, we can work with you to customize the band through specific etchings, finishes, and accents. It can still be your perfect one-of-a-kind engagement ring!

Diamond Engagement Rings

Ever wonder about the history of diamond engagement rings? It’s one we’re passionate about. It began in 1477, when Archduke Maximilian of Austria commissioned the very first diamond engagement ring on record for his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy. Of course, as it remains today, whatever happens with the Royals becomes hugely popular. Archduke Maximillian’s move sparked a trend for diamond rings among European aristocracy and nobility. And the rest of the population quickly followed suit.

Over time, and especially in the Victorian era, ring styles became much more ornate, with many featuring not only diamonds, but other precious gemstones and enamels. Other motifs, such as flowers, vines and the like inspired rings that were called “posey rings” due to the crafting of the floral theme. These styles, as well as filigree settings popularized by the Edwardians, are still hugely popular today in vintage and antique styles.

Custom Engagement Rings

Custom engagement rings have been made in Lawrence for years by Kizer Cummings. In the past, a custom designed engagement ring would have started as a sketch, hand-carved wax, then a mold cast in metal, filed and polished, and finally - presented! A custom design at the time was also typically a more expensive endeavor. Now, thanks to advances in technology, it is much easier for you as the customer to play an active role in the creation of your dream ring! CAD systems (Computer Aided Design) allow you to see your design in a 3D view, rendered as if it was a completed piece. Take a look at our custom design process here, check out our custom gallery for inspiration, then give us a call or set an appointment. We promise to make the custom design process fun (and a little informational) for you, and we’ll learn all about you and your spouse-to-be at the same time. We’ll make recommendations based on what we learn about you so your new ring can fit easily into your budget and your lifestyle.

In addition to having a strong foundation in custom design, we carry a selection of “curated rings.” We shop for these designs with an eye to what we feel is relevant for our customers. We evaluate each ring for its design concept, construction, and beauty on the bride-to-be's hand. Many of these styles are flexible enough to make individual adjustments, such as changing the metal color, and the size and shape of the center stone. We can also add hand engraving, etching, finishes and accents - making them highly personalized to the individual. This collection is also our best springboard into conceptualizing a totally new design idea in three dimensions. Here we hope you find many rings that will captivate your interest, stimulate your creativity that lead to your perfect choice.

FAQs

I love the idea of a custom ring, but I’m not sure I can afford it.

You can rest assured that at Kizer Cummings, nobody will try to pressure you or talk you into making one of the most important purchases of your life something you can’t afford. Make an appointment with us and let us know your budget. We’ll do everything we can to accommodate accordingly so you can start your life together at ease financially.

How do I figure out her ring size?

The average finger size is a 6 for women, but to take out the guesswork, we recommend asking a friend of hers or a family member if you can “borrow” one of her rings without her knowing. It’s a good way to keep the engagement ring a surprise - but you’ll need to make sure the friend or family member also agrees to keep mum on the subject!

Is custom work refundable?

Unfortunately, no. Custom designed jewelry involves metal, gems and labor furnished for a specific client. Custom jewelry is non-refundable and requires a 25%  non-refundable deposit before the work begins. Every effort will be made to accurately manufacture or produce the item(s) so ordered. Full payment upon receipt of custom work will denote the client's complete satisfaction.

Okay, I’m ready. What should I do next?

Feel free to give us a call or set an appointment here. We’re looking forward to hearing from you!
